BMW has unveiled the next-generation 5 Series in India, starting at Rs 72.90 lakh (ex-showroom). This new model is offered exclusively in the Long Wheelbase (LWB) configuration and is available with a petrol engine only. Representing the eighth generation of BMW’s highly successful mid-size sedan, the new 5 Series brings several updates and enhancements.
Exterior Design
The updated 5 Series features BMW’s latest signature kidney grille and sleek full LED headlights. Buyers can choose between 18-inch and 19-inch wheels. The new model showcases increased wheelbase length, contributing to a more spacious cabin. The rear design has shifted from the previous generation’s rounded aesthetics to a more angular appearance, highlighted by a robust bumper and distinctive wrap-around LED tail lights.
Interior and Features
Inside, the 5 Series offers a modern BMW cabin design with a one-piece screen integrating the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The centre console is expansive, accommodating controls such as the scroll wheel and gear selector. The cabin is predominantly finished in brown with grey accents, complemented by default blue ambient lighting.
The rear seat area is generously spacious and equipped with high-end features expected in this segment, though it lacks the large rear screen found in the 7 Series. Notable features include a panoramic sunroof, Bowers & Wilkins sound system, multi-zone climate control, an interior camera, leatherette upholstery, wireless charging, phone mirroring, connected car technology, a 360-degree camera, and advanced driver assistance systems including automatic parking.
Powertrain
The new 5 Series comes with a single petrol engine option: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit generating 256bhp and 400Nm of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, powers the rear wheels and includes a 48V mild hybrid system. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.
In this new iteration, the BMW 5 Series competes with the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB and the Audi A6, as well as SUVs such as the Mercedes GLC, BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
